How to Find the Model Number of an iPad
This guide explains how to identify the specific model of an iPad. This is crucial for determining if a device is too old to receive updates or run current apps.
Why is this important? Older models like the iPad Air (1st Gen), iPad 4th Gen, 3rd Gen, iPad 2, and iPad 1 no longer receive software updates. Without updates, many modern apps will not function.
If your iPad cannot turn on, you can still find the model number printed physically on the back of the device.
Method 1: Find Model Number Using Settings
On the iPad home screen, select Settings.

Select General from the menu, then tap About.

Look at the "Model Number" row.
Note: If the number shown contains a slash (e.g., M/A...), that is the Part Number, not the Model Number.

Tap on the Part Number once.
It will change to reveal the True Model Number, which starts with the letter A followed by four digits (e.g., A2602).

Method 2: Find Model Number Without Settings
Turn the iPad over and look at the back text.
The Model Number along with the Serial Number is printed in small text near the bottom, always starting with the letter A followed by four numbers (e.g., Model A1474).
