Canvas Portfolio: Overview & Transition Guide

Overview

As of November 15, 2025, Canvas has released the new Canvas Portfolio tool. This update provides a unified experience for reflection, assessment, and showcasing learning directly within the Canvas LMS.

This new tool is designed to replace both the legacy Canvas ePortfolio and Canvas Student ePortfolios (Folio/Portfolium).

⚠️ Important Retirement Notice While the new Portfolio tool is now live, legacy tools (ePortfolio and Folio) will remain accessible for a limited time.

• Retirement Date: June 30, 2026

• Action Required: Users must export content from legacy tools before this date to avoid data loss.

Timeline of Changes

• November 15, 2025 (Current State): Canvas Portfolio is enabled by default in Conroe ISD Canvas accounts.

• January 2026: In-app notifications will appear within the legacy tools to remind users to migrate their content.

• June 30, 2026: Legacy ePortfolio and Folio services will be permanently retired. After this date, old content will no longer be accessible.

What’s New in Canvas Portfolio?

The new Portfolio tool offers significant improvements over previous iterations, including:

• Unified Experience: Create and edit portfolios directly inside Canvas without separate logins.

• Assessment Integration: Seamless integration with SpeedGrader for easier instructor assessment.

• Competency Tagging: Ability to tag evidence to specific skills or learning outcomes.

• Collaboration: Tools that allow learners to add teammates for showcasing group work.

• Portability: Students can export their work to take with them after graduation.

User Action Steps

To ensure a smooth transition, all users should take the following steps:

1. Adopt the New Tool: All new portfolio assignments and personal projects should be created using the new Canvas Portfolio interface found in the navigation menu.

2. Export Legacy Content: If you have content in the old ePortfolio or Folio system that you wish to keep, please begin the export process immediately.

3. Monitor Notifications: Keep an eye on Canvas in-app messages starting January 2026 for further reminders.
