If you accidentally changed, deleted, or saved over a file on your Personal Drive (U:) or Campus Shared Drive (S:), you may be able to restore an earlier copy using the Previous Versions tab in Windows Explorer.
This option is typically available only for files or folders stored on the U: or S: drive. It does not work for files saved only on your computer’s local Desktop or Documents folders.
📘 Instructions
-
Open File Explorer and browse to the U: or S: drive.
-
Find the file or folder you want to restore. If the file was deleted, open the folder where it was originally stored.
-
Right-click the file or folder, then select Properties.
-
Open the Previous Versions tab.
-
Review the list of available versions. You may need to check more than one snapshot to find the most recent version where the file still existed or had the information you need.
-
Open to preview the older version before copying it.
-
When you’ve found the file you need, Copy it back to it’s original location or a new location of your choosing.
Troubleshooting
-
If the Previous Versions tab is empty, no restore point or saved version is currently available for that file or folder.
-
If you do not see the Previous Versions tab, make sure you are working from the U: or S: drive and not a local folder on the computer.
-
If the file is missing entirely, try checking the original folder first and then view Previous Versions on that folder instead of the individual file. It may be necessary to to back to earlier snapshots.
If you are unable to restore the file using these steps, submit a help ticket for additional assistance.
