How to Wipe an iPad
This guide explains how to erase all content and settings from an iPad (factory reset). This is necessary when preparing a device for a new user or resolving persistent software issues.
There are two methods to wipe an iPad, depending on its software version (iOS).
If you are unsure which iOS version the device is running, please view the How to Check the iOS Version of an iPad guide.
Option 1: Wipe an iPad Using Settings (iOS 13.7 or Higher)
Please use this method if the iPad is working correctly and running iOS 13.7 or newer.
1. Open Settings
Select the Settings icon on the iPad.
2. Select Transfer or Reset
Select General.
Select Transfer or Reset iPad.
Note: If you do not see "Transfer or Reset" and only see "Reset," the iPad is running an older version of iOS. Please stop and follow Option 2 (iTunes) below.
3. Erase Content
Select Erase All Content and Settings.
4. Confirm and Setup
Select Continue and follow the on-screen prompts to wipe the device. Once the wipe is complete, please refer to the guide on how to Setup the iPad.
Option 2: Wipe an Older iPad Using iTunes
Please use this method for iPads running an iOS version lower than 13.7, or if the iPad is locked/disabled.
1. Prepare the Computer
Open iTunes on your computer.
Note: If your computer does not have the software, please install iTunes first.
2. Connect the iPad
Connect the iPad to the computer using the charging cable.
3. Enter Recovery Mode
Press and hold the Power button and the Home button at the same time. Continue holding them until the iTunes logo appears on the iPad screen.
4. Select Restore
A pop-up window will appear on the computer. Select Restore.
5. Restore and Update
Select Restore and Update. iTunes will download the software and wipe the device.
6. Finish Setup
Allow the process to complete. Once finished, click through the setup steps on the iPad screen. The device is now ready to use.
